Grey is my favorite color for the home. I love how it creates a perfect canvas for any color you use against it. In our home, we have grey everywhere. Our living room walls are a medium grey, and they look great against the dark wood floors, white paneling, and coffered ceilings. In the bathrooms, the light grey walls are wonderful against all our white windows, our white subbway tiles, white and grey marble floors, and nickel fixtures.
I love grey because it’s such a wonderful neutral. It looks polished and sophisticated day and night. I’m not the only one, either — it’s long been the iconic color for Christian Dior:
Charlotte Moss used it for her chic Townhouse’s pagoda logo, and it is the color of Barbara Barry’s master bathroom at her new house in Beverly Hills (check out the current issue of Town and Country magazine).
So I was over the moon last month when Sferra previewed their new collections of linens with us and there was lots of grey everywhere. As Sferra’s creative director Aaron Stewart recently told us, they are seeing grey as the “new neutral,” and if you look closely, there’s a big trend toward decorating with shades of grey versus shades of tan, as has been the case for many years.
If you are thinking about using grey in your house, here are some great new looks from Sferra:
Simply Celeste, a solid 406 thread count percale available in white, ivory, and grey …
…used with the new MacKenzie twill sheeting …
… and for a bit of contrast, the Sasha bedding:
On top, we love the Bari matelasse coverlet in grey …
… and for softness, the Hayden throw in lamb’s wool:
And last but not least: if you are thinking about painting your rooms gray, I highly recommend reading Benjamin Moore Senior Interior Designer Sonu Mathew’s blog post, “Playful Grays Make Beautiful Neutrals.” In it, she explains how to use grey as a neutral canvas, as an accent, and in specialty finishes, and she gives specific advice for which color grey to use.
